Day 2, Amritsar:

After breakfast sightseeing of:

Golden Temple - the holy scriptures are brought in a ceremonial procession from the Akal Takhat (the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs) in the morning to the Harmandir Saheb or the Golden Temple and returned every night. Singing is central to Sikh worship. It is a feast to the soul when hymns from the holy scriptures are recited in Kirtan style and the waves of the classical ragas, a sublime blend of voice & music pervade the atmosphere. The Golden Temple was built during the years from 1574 to 1604. It was repaired and restored in 1760. There are other buildings in the complex like the Akal Takhat, the most important one among them.

Jallianwala Bagh - the historic site where hundreds of innocent Indian men, women and children were massacred by British General Michael Dyer on April 13, 1919. A memorial and garden have been created here as a national monument. Rabindra Nath Tagore, the first noble laureate for literature in India, was knighted by the British crown. He was so disgusted by this mindless killing that he gave up his knighthood in protest.

Ceremony at India Pakistan Border: In the afternoon drive about 30 Kilometers or 19 Miles on the road to Lahore to the India-Pakistan Border to watch the retreat ceremony. A visit to the border is an interesting experience especially at Sunset, when the retreat ceremony takes place with the Border Security Force on the Indian Side and the Sutlej Rangers on the Pakistan side putting up a well coordinated and spectacular display. The sound from the Bugles blown together from both sides echoes of the past when India and Pakistan were one single country. Simultaneously the flags of the two nations are ceremoniously retrieved and lights are switched to mark end of the day amidst thunderous applause. Today this border check point is the only land route open to drive to Pakistan and further to central Asia. A bus service runs through this check point connecting Delhi with Lahore in Pakistan. Return to hotel. Overnight in hotel.
